Meghan Markle, 42, Makes a Public Appearance in ‘Wrinkled’ $2000 Suit, Sparking Online Criticism

Strong feelings were expressed on the internet following Meghan Markle’s SXSW participation. Social media users criticized her dress, drawing comparisons between it and pajamas and bed linens.

Meghan Markle made a noteworthy appearance on International Women’s Day, illuminating the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

Meghan embraced a major panel on Friday with media heavyweights Brooke Shields and Katie Couric, delving deeply into conversations about women’s representation in media, a topic she holds dear.

But the Duchess’s choice of clothing for the occasion soon became the main topic of discussion on the internet. She chose a gorgeous outfit that embodied easygoing business casual, complete with a silky pinstripe skirt combo. There was a clear disagreement on the internet regarding Meghan’s fashion statement.

Critics were quick to share their thoughts, with some making derogatory comments likening her elegant outfit to bed linens. One reviewer said, “It looks like wrinkled bedsheets.” Others questioned, “Dreamy ensemble = Pyjamas?” with skepticism. and “The Dream Team? Oh, you mean that it appears as though she slept there?

AUSTIN, TEXAS – MARCH 08: Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, speaks onstage during the “Keynote: Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen” during the SXSW 2024 Conference and Festivals at Austin Convention Center on March 08, 2024 in Austin, Texas.

There was more scathing reaction to come. A few people made negative comparisons between her and Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales. One commenter called her outright, calling her a “hot mess.” The too casual and rumpled attire together with her hair make her unfit for Catherine, Princess of Wales, who always wears impeccable clothing with style.

Some said, “The woman managed to look like a complete mess yet again.” Did she wake up and opt to wear her bed linens since getting dressed would take too much effort? and “Who clothes her, is she without friends?”

In stark contrast to the criticism, Meghan was showered with love and support from her supporters. Comments like “I so much love her, her dressing and gesture” and the succinct but impactful “So pretty” were exchanged, complimenting her wardrobe selection and general attitude.

Meghan’s outfit showcases Giuliva Heritage’s exquisite craftsmanship and grandeur. Her “Husband Shirt in Striped Silk,” which has long sleeves, a fitted silhouette, and exquisite mother-of-pearl buttons, is a monument to master tailoring.

When worn with it, the “Lena Skirt in Striped Silk,” which is made of shimmering silk and fastened with a side zipper, flows elegantly to the floor. Both pieces showcase hours of labor-intensive artistry and skills. They are painstakingly handmade in Italy from 100% silk that is sourced ethically.

The blouse and skirt, which sell for roughly $973 and $1,050, respectively, are more than simply clothes; they serve as examples of Giuliva Heritage’s dedication to sustainability and high standards. Her clothing was obviously luxurious and well-made, yet the public’s perception of it remained divided.

The discourse centered on her attire, rather than the important topics she raised at the SXSW gathering, “Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen,” was lacking. The gathering addressed a number of urgent topics, one of which being the widespread toxicity of social media.

Meghan was cordially invited by SXSW to speak, describing her as an advocate of gender parity, human rights, and feminism. During the conversation, Meghan talked about her experiences with social media and the harassment she had, especially when she was a new mother and during her pregnancies.

Meghan said, emphasizing the brutality more than the catty tone of the attacks, “The bulk of the bullying and abuse that I was experiencing in social media and online was when I was pregnant with Archie and with Lily and with a newborn with each of them.”

“As mothers, you understand that this is such a delicate and holy time. The agony of that can either cause you to give in or almost cause you to give up,” she continued.

She underlined the need for a safer online environment, particularly for women and kids, and drew attention to the terrible irony that hate crimes against other women are mostly committed by women. “We need to remember who we are as human beings again. We have lost sight of that.” Her moving speech emphasized a more general appeal for people to practice empathy and kindness.

The panel also boasted other distinguished speakers, including Emmy Award-winning journalist Katie Couric; acclaimed actress, model, and author Brooke Shields; and Nancy Wang Yuen, a sociologist and diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant.

Within this vibrant atmosphere, Prince Harry, seated among the audience, supported his wife. Being in the spotlight, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are often the subject of criticism and backlash. Previously, they went on a Valentine’s date that sparked online hate.

Meghan donned a striking ensemble of red, celebrating Valentine’s Day with Harry in Whistler, British Columbia. The royal couple, momentarily stepping away from their Invictus Games commitments, were seen exiting an upscale Italian eatery, Il Caminetto, following an intimate dinner.

The venue for their romantic dinner stands as one of Whistler’s premier dining establishments, known for its exquisite Italian cuisine. Dishes range from $21 to $55, while bottles of wine range from $5,758 to $10,334. People from the online community shared their sentiments on the dinner online.

“Secret?” one Facebook user wrote. “Cameras and summoned Paps everywhere.” Another person concluded through a tweet that the couple’s dinner was “paid for by Invictus, donated funds for wounded veterans,” adding that their action was “grossly inappropriate.”

A second person on Twitter echoed, “Who paid i wonder [sic].” Another social media user also wrote, “How nice of BC taxpayers to be paying for this.”

One person particularly emphasized that Meghan’s “outfit looked a mess.” Meanwhile, another looked for the kids, writing, “No children… hmmm… wonder where they are… not seen them…”

Harry’s dedication to the Invictus Games and its athletes remains unwavering. Mike Bourgeois, a former participant, highlighted the royal’s genuine interest in the competitors’ journeys, from their training and coaching to their well-being.

His focus is on understanding the athletes. It’s about recognizing those embarking on a journey of recovery. That’s what drives him,” Bourgeois said. “He sees you and hears you. That’s what it was like for me. And I know that’s what it was like for a lot of my teammates.”

Reflecting on her childhood, Meghan has spoken about the complexities of identity and the challenges of fitting into categories. She described that when she was younger, she had curly hair, a freckled face, and pale skin. Her appearance was due to being mixed race, which made it difficult for her to fit in.

Today, as a mother, Meghan sees reflections of her own childhood in her son, Archie. A photo that was shared of her at the age of five, cozy in a black hoodie, bears a striking resemblance to Archie at the same age, illustrating the striking resemblance her son bears to her.
